Children's Bone Marrow Transplant
UMMC and Children's of Mississippi offer the state's only program for transplanting stem cells gathered from circulating blood, bone marrow, and cord blood. Blood and marrow stem cell transplants are one of the treatment options for children and adults with immune deficiencies, metabolic disorders, sickle cell diseases, and certain types of cancer, including leukemia and lymphoma.
Our program
The bone marrow transplant program at UMMC began in 1992 with four transplants. Our program - including the clinical program, the bone marrow harvest and apheresis collection area, and the marrow transplant processing lab - has been continuously accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) since 2002. Our on-site collection center and processing lab are registered with the FDA.
We are also affiliated with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) network as a center for transplants, donors, collection, and apheresis.
Our facilities
UMMC's continuum of care includes a 12-bed transplant unit featuring special HEPA filtration, kitchen and laundry, children's activity room, wireless Internet, family visiting room, and outpatient infusion center.
Our facilities also include an on-site stem cell collection, processing, and storage center that is FDA registered and FACT-accredited.
Our team
Our team includes pediatric hematologists, care coordinators, and a low nurse-to-patient ratio. We are a team of specialists who work together to care for kids and families.
